Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

About The Book
Title: Fangirl
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Genre: Young Adult Contemporary
Pages: 457
Rating: ★★★★
Synopsis:
Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan.... But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she's really good at it. She and her twin, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it's what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fanfiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere. Cath's sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can't let go. She doesn't want to.

Now that they're going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn't want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She's got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend; a fiction-writing professor who thinks fanfiction is the end of the civilized world; a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words... and she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

My Review
I decided to give Rainbow Rowell a second chance. Eleanor & Park put a gross taste in my mouth for this author. It was extremely racist and god-awful. I was nervous picking this book up and put it off for a long time.

Well…

I really liked it.

I’m so shocked that I liked this book. So shocked. Well. Not really, I guess. It’s about a girl who writes fanfiction about a story that’s basically Harry Potter. I love Cath. She’s basically me but more talented when it comes to writing.

Overall, I thought this book was pretty adorable. The story is super cute and I loved all the characters. Unfortunately, I would have loved it more if Cath hid her identity online and didn’t tell anyone she wrote one of the most popular Simon Snow fan fiction. Kind of like Eliza and her Monsters.

I loved the college setting. It makes this book not feel so young. I would kind of consider this book as New Adult since it is in college. It’s not smutty in the slightest, which was kind of a bummer. I didn’t expect that going into this book though so I’ll take it as it comes.

Nick was the sweetest muffin boy. Wren was a bitch that needed to go somewhere, kinda mad that Cath forgave her so easily. It also kind of aggravated me that the mom plot got dropped quickly too.

I had a good time reading this book. I’m not trying to overanalyze books anymore. I’m reading for fun and enjoyment. I don’t care if that makes me a bad book reviewer or not. I’m here for a good time.

  1. I adore this book because I relate to Cath so much. I've also written a deal of fanfiction in my time (still do sometimes), so I get her take on it. I agree though about Wren, she was such a bitch. Nick and Levi were my favorites out of the characters.
