REVIEW: Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover

BEWARE!!! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

So this book is just a retelling of Hopeless, just in Holder’s point of view. We learn more things about Holder and his family than we did in the first book. And so this review won’t be too long because I’ve done a review on Hopeless and don’t want to repeat everything again. I’m just going to pinpoint things we didn’t know from Hopeless.

In the first few chapters, we know that Grayson is a shit head who is bad to Lesslie. Holder makes him break up with her and not even two days after that, Les kills herself. Holder is left thinking that it’s all his fault she decided to take her life.

Holder finds a notebook of hers that she was supposed to use with her therapy and he begins to write notes to her. He also sleeps with her best friend which was totally weird and awkward. They both blamed Les for that.

And then a whole bunch of stuff happens that we (hopefully) already know about. He meets Sky and they start dating. Blah, blah, blah.

We do find out that he was hoping that she wasn’t Hope because she has a great life and he didn’t want it to be ruined because of her past. I’m pretty sure that was mentioned in Hopeless, but oh well.

We find out that the eReader that Brecken bought for Sky isn’t really from Brecken. Holder bought it for her and told Brecken to say it was from him.

There’s also the scene where they’re in Daniel’s basement getting hot and heavy. And how in the hell did we not see Daniel’s name in Hopeless at all?

But not long after that, Sky finds out she’s hope and all hell breaks loose. She finds out she was kidnapped and raped. They watch her dad commit suicide and she goes back to Karen as if nothing was wrong.

I understand why Karen did what she did, but she could have still gotten the police involved.

So Holder finally reads the suicide note that Leslie left. He finds out that his mother knew about Sky’s father raping her and that’s why she killed herself. He also finds out that Les and their mother saw Hope when Les was fourteen.

His mother and Les knew for years that Hope was okay and didn’t think to mention it to him. That’s really fucked up on their part. I know it was to keep Hope and Karen a secret from the law, but it’s still messed up that they put him through that.

This book is only getting four stars from me. I just felt like I read the same book over again. It was good but mostly because Hopeless was good.
