Nikolai Lantsov has always had a gift for the impossible. No one knows what he endured in his country’s bloody civil war—and he intends to keep it that way. Now, as enemies gather at his weakened borders, the young king must find a way to refill Ravka’s coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army.

Yet with every day a dark magic within him grows stronger, threatening to destroy all he has built. With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha Squaller, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him. He will risk everything to save his country and himself. But some secrets aren’t meant to stay buried—and some wounds aren’t meant to heal.

First off, I'm gonna say you are all fake friends. You knew how much I love The Darkling and you didn't tell me to read this book ASAP.

I'm glad I finally went through the pain and boredom of reading Six Of Crows and Crooked Kingdom to get here. The ending to this book had me squealing. I'm freaking ecstatic for the next book in the Nikolai duology.

I really enjoyed this installment in the Grisha world. I've missed a lot of these characters. Nikolai wasn't a huge part in the Six Of Crows duo, but he was in there. I'm glad that we're getting more of his snarkiness.

I'm not going lie, there is a lot of build-up in this book. Nothing happens through most of it. I was perfectly fine with that. Leigh Bardugo did the same thing in Six Of Crows and I hated it. It was perfect for King Of Scars. There was build-up in this book that lead to something I freaking love! That freaking plot twist has me dying.

I don't really want to go into a lot of detail about this book, as some parts may be spoilers in previous Grisha books.

Just know, I really enjoyed this story and can't wait for the next one. Also, don't expect this book to be action packed, it's not.

4/5 stars

  1. I'm actually reading this one right now. Haha. I love Nikolai that's why I wish there was more of him. I'm at around 40% in and I'm still a bit disappointed there wasn't more Nikolai. Lol
