Review: The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis

Synopsis:

Alex Craft knows how to kill someone. And she doesn’t feel bad about it.

Three years ago, when her older sister, Anna, was murdered and the killer walked free, Alex uncaged the language she knows best—the language of violence. While her own crime goes unpunished, Alex knows she can’t be trusted among other people. Not with Jack, the star athlete who wants to really know her but still feels guilty over the role he played the night Anna’s body was discovered. And not with Peekay, the preacher’s kid with a defiant streak who befriends Alex while they volunteer at an animal shelter. Not anyone.

As their senior year unfolds, Alex’s darker nature breaks out, setting these three teens on a collision course that will change their lives forever.

 My Review:

TRIGGER WARNINGS: SEXUAL ASSAULT, VIOLENCE, ANIMAL ABUSE

The Female of the Species follows Alex, a character whose sister was raped and murdered. The killer was never caught. Alex is the type of person to put things into her own hands. Personally, I thought this was a bit unrealistic. It’s a fictional book though. A young teen taking matters into her own hands should be sloppy.

Alex keeps to herself mostly. Until she makes friends with Peekay and more friendships bloom from that. She’s no longer a lone person. Although, some people think there is something a bit off about her.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s raw. It’s sad. It angers. It’s everything that people should know about. This book discusses rape culture. This book brings out that stupid saying “boys will be boys” and how it’s a toxic saying.

I am not a fan of how this book ended, which is why I’m not giving it a full five stars. It ended too fast and there was no repercussions. I know that’s how it can be in real life (how it mostly is). It makes this book more real. I just wanted a happy ending for Alex.

4/5 Stars
